What kind of noise is it?
Listen properly for ten seconds before opening anything. The character of the sound narrows the cause faster than any software tool.
Loud at idle, or loud under load?
The second question, and it splits the problem cleanly. Leave the machine alone for five minutes with nothing running, and listen.
- Quiet at idle, loud when you're doing something demanding. This is correct behaviour. A machine rendering video or running a game should be audible. Nothing is wrong.
- Loud even when idle. Either something invisible is keeping the processor busy, or the cooling has degraded so much that even idle heat needs full fan speed. Both are covered below.
- Loud immediately at power-on, before the system loads. Fans often spin to maximum for a second or two at startup — that's normal self-test behaviour. If it stays at maximum through startup, the system may have failed a fan or temperature check, or a BIOS fan setting has been reset.
- Started suddenly, with no change in what you do. Suspect software first: an update, a new background program, or something you didn't install.
If something is keeping the processor busy
Before touching hardware, find out whether the fan is responding to real work. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS and sort by CPU.
- Something is at 60–100% while you're doing nothing. That's your cause. Common culprits: a stuck update process, a search indexer rebuilding after a major OS update, an antivirus full scan, a cloud sync client reprocessing a large library, or a browser tab running something heavy.
- Give updates and indexing time. After a big OS update these run for hours and the machine will be hot and loud throughout. Leave it plugged in overnight before concluding anything is broken.
- A process you don't recognise using constant CPU deserves a search on its exact name, and a scan with your built-in security tool. Cryptocurrency mining malware is specifically designed to max the processor, and a suddenly loud computer is often the only symptom the owner notices.
- Everything is idle and it's still loud? Then it's genuinely thermal or mechanical — carry on below.

Dust — the most common physical cause
Fans push air through a heatsink: a dense block of thin metal fins. Over a few years those fins fill with a compacted felt of dust and hair, air stops flowing, temperatures rise, and the fan spins faster to compensate. The machine gets louder every year and nobody notices the gradual slope.
Desktop: power off, unplug, open the side panel, and look. If you can't see daylight through the heatsink fins, that's your answer. Use compressed air in short bursts, from the outside of the fins pushing dust outward, and hold each fan still with a finger while you do it — spinning a fan with compressed air can generate voltage back through it and damage components. Don't forget the power supply intake and the case filters.
Laptop: compressed air through the vents helps but is far less effective, because the dust mat sits against the exhaust fins where you can't reach it. Opening the bottom panel and clearing the heatsink directly is dramatically better if you're comfortable doing it, and cheap at a repair shop if you're not.
Two things to avoid: a vacuum cleaner, which generates static, and cleaning while the machine is plugged in.
When the fan itself is failing
Fan bearings wear out. The progression is predictable: quiet, then a faint tick, then a rattle, then a grind, then silence — and silence is the dangerous stage, because the machine will overheat and shut down without warning.
How to confirm:
- Locate the sound. On a desktop, open the case and listen with the machine running. Briefly stopping a fan with a fingertip — carefully, and only for a second — tells you immediately whether it's the one making the noise.
- Look for something touching the blades. A cable that's drifted into a fan, a loose sticker, or a dust clump on one blade unbalancing it. Free fixes, and more common than actual bearing failure.
- Check the fan actually spins. A seized fan is silent, which people mistake for a quiet computer right up until the machine shuts down under load.
- Check the mounting screws. A fan that's worked loose buzzes against the case and sounds far worse than it is.
Case and CPU fans are inexpensive and straightforward to replace on a desktop. On a laptop it's a specific part for your model, and worth having a shop do unless you're confident with the disassembly.
Laptop specifics
- Check what the machine is sitting on. Laptops take air in from underneath. A bed, sofa, cushion, or lap blocks the intake completely. This is the single most common cause of a loud laptop and it costs nothing to fix — a hard flat surface, or any stand that lifts the base a centimetre.
- Old thermal paste. After about five years the compound between chip and heatsink dries out and stops transferring heat. Replacing it is a genuine repair, cheap at a shop, and often transforms both noise and performance.
- Check the manufacturer's own control app. Many laptops ship with performance modes — quiet, balanced, performance — and these get reset by updates or knocked by a keyboard shortcut. Switching back to a quieter profile costs a little speed and a lot of noise.
- Unplug it and see. Many laptops run at reduced power on battery, so if the noise drops immediately on battery, the machine is simply being allowed to work harder on mains.
- Charging while gaming is the worst case. The battery generates heat, the processor generates heat, and the cooling has to handle both.
Making a healthy machine quieter
If temperatures are fine and nothing is faulty, you can still reduce the noise:
- Adjust the fan curve. Desktop motherboards let you set how aggressively fans respond to temperature, in the BIOS or the manufacturer's utility. Many ship far more aggressive than they need to be. Raise the point at which fans ramp up and the machine gets noticeably quieter with a few degrees more heat — a fine trade in most cases.
- Move the machine. A desktop wedged into a closed cabinet recirculates its own hot air. Fifteen centimetres of clearance behind and above changes the temperature meaningfully.
- Larger fans are quieter. A 140 mm fan moves the same air as a 120 mm at lower speed, and speed is what makes noise. Relevant when you're replacing one anyway.
- Cap the frame rate in games. If your monitor is 60 Hz, rendering 200 frames per second only heats the room.
- Check the room. Cooling can only ever get the machine down toward ambient. In a hot room in summer, a loud fan is the correct response and there is nothing to fix inside the case.
When loud actually means trouble
Most loud fans are a nuisance rather than a warning. Take it seriously if:
- The machine shuts off on its own under load. That's a thermal cut-out, and continuing to use it that way shortens its life. Stop and clean it.
- Performance degrades the longer you use it — fast for ten minutes, then progressively slower. That's thermal throttling, covered in our freezing guide.
- The fan has gone silent after a period of grinding. A dead fan is far more dangerous than a loud one.
- You can smell hot plastic or burning. Power it off and don't turn it back on.
About that high-pitched whine
If there's a thin electrical squeal that changes with what's on screen rather than with fan speed — often worst in menus or during loading screens — that's coil whine, produced by electrical components vibrating at high frequency. It comes from the graphics card or power supply, not a fan.
It is generally harmless and not a sign of failure. Capping frame rate often reduces it. It is not fixed by cleaning, replacing fans, or reinstalling anything — which is worth knowing before you spend a weekend on it.
Listen first: smooth whoosh means it's working, rattle means something is touching the blades, grinding means the bearing is dying, and an electrical whine isn't the fan. Then check whether it's loud at idle — if so, look for a process eating the CPU before you open anything. If the machine is more than two or three years old and has never been cleaned, dust is the most likely answer, and it's free to fix.
