Three kinds of dead
Press the power button, then look and listen carefully for ten seconds. Ignore the screen for now.

Getting this right first matters enormously: the fix for "no picture" is nothing like the fix for "no power," and people routinely buy a charger for a screen fault.
The residual power drain
Do this before anything else. It costs nothing, takes two minutes, and revives a genuinely large share of laptops that appear completely dead — including ones people have already written off.
Laptops hold a small residual charge in their circuitry. When something latches into a bad state, that charge keeps it stuck there, and a normal power-button press does nothing. Draining it forces a true cold start.
- Unplug the charger.
- If the battery is removable, take it out.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds with no power connected. Nothing will appear to happen — that's expected.
- Reconnect the battery if you removed it, plug the charger in, and press power normally.
On some models the manufacturer specifies a slightly different sequence (a particular key combination, or a small pinhole reset button on the underside). If the simple version doesn't work, search your exact model plus "hard reset" or "drain residual power" for the official procedure.
No power at all
Prove the charger works
- Look at the charger's own LED, if it has one. No light means the charger or the socket, not the laptop.
- Try a different wall socket, plugged directly rather than through an extension lead or a surge strip. Strips fail silently and often.
- Check the charging light on the laptop. If it lights when you plug in, power is arriving and your problem is further in.
- Inspect the cable at both ends. Charger cables fail at the strain points — where the cable meets the brick, and where it meets the plug. Bend it gently along its length and watch for the light flickering.
- Feel the brick. A working charger under load is slightly warm. Stone cold with nothing connected is inconclusive; stone cold while plugged into a laptop that should be charging is suspicious.
- Use the right charger. A USB-C laptop will refuse to charge, or charge far too slowly to boot, from an underpowered phone charger. Wattage is printed on the brick.
Then the battery
If the laptop runs on the charger but not on battery, or only starts after being plugged in for a long time, the battery is the suspect. Leave it charging for a full hour before concluding anything — a deeply discharged battery needs to reach a minimum voltage before the machine will start at all.
On a laptop with a removable battery, try running on mains with the battery out. If it boots, you've found it.
If the bottom panel is bulging, the trackpad has lifted, or the case no longer closes flat, that's a swollen battery. Don't press it, don't puncture it, and don't keep charging it. Power down, keep it away from anything flammable, and take it to a repair centre. Swollen lithium batteries are a fire risk, not just a fault.
It runs, but the screen is black
Lights on, fan audible, maybe even the startup sound — but nothing visible. The computer is very possibly working perfectly.
The external monitor test
This is the key isolation, and it takes one cable. Connect an external monitor or a TV via HDMI or USB-C and power the laptop on.
- The external display shows a desktop → the laptop is fine and you have a screen, cable, or backlight fault. That's a repair, and in the meantime the machine is completely usable on an external monitor.
- The external display shows nothing either → it isn't reaching the point of producing video. Treat it as a boot failure and continue below.
Check the backlight specifically
Take the laptop into a dark room, power it on, and shine a bright torch at a steep angle across the screen. If you can faintly make out a desktop or a login screen, the panel is displaying correctly and only the backlight has failed. That's often a cheaper repair than a full panel, and it's worth knowing before you get quoted.
Simple things that mimic this
- Brightness at zero. Press the brightness-up key several times. Yes, really — it happens, especially after a device is knocked or a key sticks.
- Display output stuck on an external. If it was last used with a docking station or a monitor, it may still be sending video there. On Windows, press Windows + P a few times to cycle display modes, blind.
- The lid sensor. A stuck or misaligned lid-close sensor makes the laptop think it's shut. Open and close the lid a few times, and check for a small magnet or sensor spot near the hinge or bezel.
It powers up but won't boot
You get lights, fans, maybe a manufacturer logo, and then it stalls or shows an error.
Read the message
- "No bootable device", "Operating system not found", "No boot disk" → the machine can't see its drive. Either the drive has failed, or it has come loose. This is the most common cause of this category, and it usually means a drive replacement.
- An automatic repair or recovery screen → the operating system is damaged but the hardware is probably fine. Let the automatic repair run fully — it can take a long time and interrupting it makes things worse.
- A blue screen with an error code before it restarts → note the exact code. It usually names a driver or a subsystem, and that's the whole diagnosis.
- Stuck at the logo indefinitely → most often a failing drive or a pending update that can't complete. Leave it for 30 minutes before deciding it's stuck; a large update genuinely can take that long with no visible progress.
Disconnect everything external
Unplug every USB device, card, dock, and external drive, then try again. A machine will happily try to boot from a USB stick you forgot was in the port, then stall — and a faulty dock or peripheral can prevent startup entirely. This is thirty seconds and eliminates a real category of cause.
Reseat the memory
On laptops with accessible memory slots, RAM working loose over years of heating and cooling is a genuine and common cause of no-boot. Power off, unplug, remove the battery if possible, open the access panel, unclip each module and press it firmly back in until the clips snap. Many machines with this fault start immediately afterwards. If you have two modules, also try booting with each one alone — that identifies a failed module.
On modern thin laptops and all Apple Silicon Macs the memory is soldered, so this doesn't apply.
Try to boot something else
If you can boot from a Linux live USB stick and get a working desktop, your hardware is fundamentally sound and the problem is your installed operating system — which also means your files are very likely recoverable. This is the single most informative test available at this stage.
Beeps and blinking lights
Many laptops report faults before they can display anything, using beeps or a blinking pattern on the power or caps-lock LED. These are precise diagnostics, and they're free.
Count carefully — for example, three short blinks, pause, repeat — then search your exact model plus "diagnostic beep codes" or "LED blink codes." The manufacturer publishes a table. Patterns typically distinguish memory failures, graphics failures, and board failures, which tells you immediately whether this is a five-minute reseat or a replacement decision.
Getting your files off a dead laptop
If the machine won't recover, your data usually still exists. Two approaches:
- Boot from a Linux live USB and copy your files to an external drive. Nothing is installed, the machine's own operating system isn't involved, and it works on most PCs.
- Remove the drive and read it in another computer using an inexpensive USB adapter or enclosure. Note the drive type first — 2.5" SATA and M.2 NVMe need different adapters.
If the drive itself is the failure — clicking, not detected, or detected then vanishing — stop and read our freezing guide's section on failing drives before running anything else on it. Repeated attempts on a dying drive can turn recoverable into unrecoverable.
When to stop
Take it to a technician when:
- There's any smell of burning, or visible scorching.
- Liquid got into it. Don't keep trying to power it on — that's what causes the permanent damage. Power off, don't charge, and get it opened and cleaned quickly; corrosion progresses over days.
- The battery is swollen.
- The blink or beep code points at the board.
- It's still under warranty — opening it yourself may void that.
Before paying for a repair, get a quote and weigh it against the machine's age. A drive or battery replacement is usually well worth it. A motherboard replacement on a five-year-old laptop rarely is.
Unplug everything, hold the power button 30 seconds with no power connected, then plug in and try again — this alone fixes a lot of apparently dead laptops. Still nothing? Watch for lights and fans: no lights → charger and battery. Lights but black screen → plug in an external monitor; if that works, the laptop is fine and the screen isn't. Lights then an error → read the message and disconnect all USB devices.
