The four parts
Power travels: wall socket → adapter → cable → phone's port → battery. A failure anywhere breaks the chain, and the symptoms look identical from the outside. Testing means isolating one link at a time.
Rough frequency, from experience and from what repair shops report: the cable fails most often, followed by debris in the port, then the adapter, then the battery, and last the charging circuitry on the board. Test in roughly that order and you'll usually be done quickly.
Start with the port — here's why
Your charging port is a small open cavity that lives in a pocket full of fabric fibres. Every time you put the phone away, a little more lint is pushed in, and it compacts at the bottom into a dense felt pad. Eventually the connector can no longer seat fully — the plug goes in, feels normal, but the contacts don't meet.
The tell-tale signs: the cable feels like it doesn't click in as deeply as it used to, or it charges only if you hold it at an angle or press it in. That is compacted lint far more often than it's a broken port.
How to clean it safely:
- Power the phone off first.
- Shine a bright light into the port and look. You will usually see the grey pad of lint sitting at the bottom.
- Use a wooden or plastic toothpick, or a plastic dental pick. Scrape gently along the bottom and walls, working the debris toward the opening. It typically comes out as one surprisingly large piece.
- Do not use a metal pin, needle, or paperclip. The contacts are fragile and shorting them can damage the charging circuit permanently.
- Compressed air helps afterwards, but rarely works on its own — the lint is packed, not loose.
This costs nothing and revives a lot of phones that people were about to replace.
The swap test
Now isolate the rest, changing exactly one thing at a time.
- Different cable, same adapter and socket. Works now? The cable was the problem. Cables fail internally at the strain point near the connector, and they often look perfect from the outside. If a cable only works when held at a certain angle, it's already failed — replace it.
- Different adapter, known-good cable. Works now? The adapter is dead. These fail silently and reasonably often, especially cheap ones.
- Different wall socket, and not through an extension lead. Rules out the socket and the strip.
- Try wireless charging, if your phone supports it. This is the most informative single test available. If wireless charging works but wired doesn't, the battery and charging system are fine and the fault is definitively in the port or cable. If neither works, look at the battery or the board.
- Charge from a computer's USB port. Slow, but it tells you whether the phone accepts power at all. If the computer detects the phone as a device but the phone doesn't charge, the data pins work while the power path doesn't — a useful detail for a repair shop.
Use good hardware for these tests. A phone will often refuse to charge, or charge extremely slowly, from a non-compliant cheap USB-C cable. If your only spare is a no-name cable from a petrol station, borrow a known-good one before concluding anything.
When it's not hardware at all
Sometimes the phone is fine and the software is stuck.
- Force restart while plugged in. This is different from a normal restart and works even on an apparently frozen phone. On most iPhones: press volume up, press volume down, then press and hold the side button until the logo appears. On most Android phones: hold power and volume down for 10–20 seconds. A phone that appeared dead frequently springs back.
- Check whether the screen is the actual problem. A phone with a failed display will charge normally while appearing completely dead. Plug it in, wait ten minutes, then call it from another phone. If it rings, the phone is alive and you have a screen fault, not a charging fault.
- Battery optimisation looks like a fault. If your phone sits at 80% and won't go higher, that's almost certainly optimised or adaptive charging deliberately holding it there to reduce battery ageing — it finishes before your usual wake-up time. Not a fault. You can disable it in the battery settings if you need a full charge for a trip.
- After a system update. If charging behaviour changed the day an update installed, check for a follow-up patch. This does happen, and it usually gets fixed quickly.
Temperature and moisture warnings
"Charging on hold — temperature"
Lithium-ion batteries are damaged by charging when too hot or too cold, so phones refuse. This is protection working correctly, not a malfunction.
Take the case off, move the phone out of direct sun, stop whatever is running, and wait. Charging under a pillow or duvet is a common and genuinely unsafe cause.
"Liquid detected in the connector"
The phone has sensed moisture and disabled the port to prevent corrosion and shorting. Treat this seriously:
- Don't override it unless you have a genuine emergency. Pushing power through a wet connector is how a recoverable dunking becomes a dead phone.
- Don't use rice. It does essentially nothing and leaves starch and dust in the port.
- Do unplug, tap the phone gently with the port facing down to shed droplets, and leave it in a dry, moving-air spot for several hours. Overnight is better.
- Don't use a hairdryer on hot — heat damages the battery and can push moisture further inside.
- Wireless charging still works while the port is disabled, which is a useful bridge if you have a pad.
- If the warning persists after a day of drying, there's probably corrosion, and that needs a repair shop.
It charges, but painfully slowly
- Check the adapter's output rating. Fast charging needs an adapter capable of it. An old 5 W adapter will charge a modern phone very slowly, and that's expected. The wattage is printed on the adapter itself in small text.
- The cable matters as much as the adapter. A cable not rated for the current your charger can deliver caps the speed regardless of the adapter. This catches people who buy a fast charger and keep the old cable.
- Computer USB ports are slow by design, particularly older ones. Not a fault.
- Using the phone while charging — especially navigation, gaming, or video — can consume nearly as much as the charger supplies. Screen off, and it will charge far faster.
- Charging slows down deliberately past about 80%. Every phone does this to protect the battery. The last 20% always takes disproportionately long, and that is normal.
- An aged battery charges slower and drains faster. Check maximum capacity — the method for both platforms is in our battery guide.
Completely dead, no response at all
No light, no vibration, nothing on screen. Work through this before assuming the worst:
- Plug in with a known-good cable and adapter and leave it for at least 30 minutes. A deeply discharged battery needs to reach a minimum voltage before the phone can even display a charging icon. Ten minutes is not enough.
- After that, do the force restart described above while still plugged in.
- Feel the phone. If it's warm, it's drawing power and the battery is charging even without any display — that points at a screen problem, not a charging problem.
- Try a different charging method entirely, wireless if available.
If there's no response after all of this, it's a battery or board fault and needs a technician.
When to stop and get help
the back or screen is bulging or lifting away from the frame; the phone gets genuinely hot rather than warm while charging; you can smell anything sweet or chemical from it; or there's any visible swelling around the battery. A swollen lithium battery is a fire risk. Don't press it, don't puncture it, don't put it in a drawer and forget it. Power it off, keep it away from anything flammable, and take it to a repair centre. Many councils and electronics retailers also accept damaged batteries for safe disposal.
Short of that, a battery replacement at an authorised service centre is usually far cheaper than a new phone, and a charging port replacement is a routine, inexpensive repair on most models. Neither is a reason to replace the device.
Shine a light in the port and pick out the lint with a wooden toothpick — this alone fixes a large share of cases. Then swap cable, then adapter, then socket, changing one thing at a time. Try wireless charging: if it works, the fault is the port or cable, full stop. If nothing responds, plug in for 30 minutes and force restart while connected.
