Unplug the machine at the wall and turn off its water supply first. The drum may still hold a lot of water, and it comes out fast — have towels and a shallow tray ready before opening any filter. Water and mains electricity in the same place is the one genuine hazard here. If the machine is under warranty, opening it may affect that; and anything involving the machine's wiring or its plumbing beyond the accessible filter is a job for someone qualified. Your manual takes precedence over anything here.
Where the water is supposed to go
The route is short and everything on it is mechanical:
The filter, which is usually it
Nearly every front-loading machine has a drain pump filter behind a small hatch at the bottom front, often hidden by a kick panel. It's designed to be opened by the owner without tools, and its whole purpose is to catch coins, hair grips, buttons, tissue, screws and the small hard things that survive pockets.
It fills up over months and years. When it's full enough, water can't get past and the machine stops mid-cycle with a drum full of water.
What to expect when opening it, because people are caught out:
- A great deal of water comes out, and it keeps coming. Many machines have a small drain tube next to the filter specifically so you can empty it into a tray first — use it if yours has one.
- It will smell. Standing water plus trapped fabric does that. It isn't a sign of damage.
- The filter may be stiff if it hasn't been opened in years. It usually unscrews anticlockwise.
- Check the housing, not just the filter. Reach in and feel around the impeller — the pump's small propeller — which is often visible once the filter is out. A sock or a wire can wrap around it and stop it turning.
- Refit it properly. A filter that isn't fully seated leaks, and the leak looks like a much more serious fault.
If a machine has never had its filter cleaned and it stops draining, this is the first and usually the last thing to check.
The hose and the standpipe
If the filter is clear, the blockage is downstream. Three things to look at:
- The drain hose is kinked. Extremely common after a machine has been pulled out and pushed back — the hose gets trapped against the wall. Free to fix and easy to miss.
- The hose is blocked internally with detergent residue and lint, which builds into a soft sludge over years. Detaching it into a bucket and flushing it through settles this quickly.
- The standpipe or waste connection is blocked, not the machine at all. The tell is that the same drain also handles a sink or dishwasher that's slow or gurgling. In that case the machine is fine and the plumbing is the problem.
One more that surprises people: the drain hose has to rise to a certain height before it goes down. If it sits too low, or is pushed too far into the standpipe, the machine can siphon — water drains out continuously as it fills, and the machine never completes a cycle. The correct height is in the manual and it matters more than it sounds.
When it really is the pump
Pumps do fail, but less often than the internet suggests. The distinguishing signs:
- Silence at the drain stage. A working pump makes a distinct whirring hum. If the machine reaches the point where it should empty and nothing audible happens, that points at the pump, its wiring, or the control board.
- A loud grinding or rattling when it tries — usually something jammed in the impeller rather than the motor itself, which is a blockage you can often clear.
- It hums but nothing moves. A seized impeller, again often something wrapped around it.
- It worked, then failed suddenly with no warning, and the filter is genuinely clear.
A pump is a modest part and, on many machines, a replaceable one — but it involves the machine's electrics and its plumbing, which is where the sensible line is for most people.
What the error code means
Machines show a code and people search the code expecting it to name a part. It doesn't — it names a condition the machine detected, exactly like a car's diagnostic codes.
A drain error typically means: "I ran the pump for the expected time and the water level sensor still reports water in the drum." That single condition is produced by a blocked filter, a kinked hose, a blocked standpipe, a jammed impeller, a failed pump, or a faulty level sensor — all of them.
So the code tells you which chain failed, not which link. It's useful for confirming the machine has correctly identified a drainage problem, and useless for skipping the physical checks.
Two practical notes. Codes are manufacturer-specific, so a code that means one thing on one brand means something else on another — the manual or the maker's own list is the only reliable source. And after clearing a blockage, most machines need the cycle cancelled and restarted before the code goes.
Why it won't spin either
A machine that won't drain almost never spins, and this confuses people into thinking two things broke at once. They didn't.
Spinning a drum full of water would throw the machine across the room — the load is enormously heavy and unbalanced. So machines are designed to refuse to spin until the water is gone. The failed spin is a consequence, not a second fault.
The same logic explains sopping wet clothes at the end of a cycle: the machine drained partially or slowly, decided it couldn't spin safely, and stopped. Fix the drainage and the spin returns on its own.
What to check, in order
- Unplug it and turn off the water. Non-negotiable first step.
- Check the drain hose isn't kinked behind the machine. Free, thirty seconds, and a real share of cases.
- Check whether a nearby sink drains normally. If it doesn't, the problem is your plumbing, not the machine.
- Open the filter, with towels and a tray ready. Clean it and feel inside the housing for anything wrapped around the impeller.
- Refit the filter firmly, restore power and water, and run a short rinse-and-spin to test.
- If it still fails, detach the drain hose into a bucket and check whether water comes out under pressure. If it does, the machine is pumping and the blockage is beyond it. If it doesn't, the problem is upstream.
- Listen at the drain stage. Silence points at the pump; grinding points at something jammed.
- Note the code and look it up for your exact model before calling anyone — it saves a visit that only clears a filter.
Why it happened, and what stops it
- Clean the filter periodically. Every few months is plenty for most households. This one habit prevents the majority of these failures.
- Check pockets, especially for coins and tissues. Tissue is worse than it sounds — it disintegrates into a paste that lines the hose.
- Use a mesh bag for small items — socks, underwiring, baby clothes. Underwires escaping bras are a classic cause of a jammed pump.
- Don't overdose detergent. Excess doesn't rinse away; it builds residue in the hose and drum, and it's a common cause of gradual slow draining.
- Run an occasional hot maintenance wash with an empty drum to clear residue, if your machine has one.
- Check the hose after moving the machine. The most common cause of a machine that stopped draining the day after a kitchen was rearranged.
The pump rarely fails; the path blocks. That path is drum → hose → filter → pump → drain hose, and the filter exists specifically to catch things before they reach the pump — which is why the filter is usually the answer. Unplug the machine, have towels ready, and open the filter hatch at the bottom front, then feel inside the housing for anything wrapped around the impeller. A kinked drain hose behind the machine is the other free fix, and a slow sink nearby means the problem is your plumbing rather than the machine. The error code names the condition, not the part, and a machine that won't drain won't spin either — that's a safety design, not a second fault.
