Switch the oven off at the wall or at the cooker isolator switch before touching anything inside it. Ovens run on high-current circuits and elements hold heat long after the power is off. If you smell gas at any point, stop immediately — ventilate, leave, and call your national gas emergency number from outside. Replacing a bake element is within reach of a confident person on some models and firmly an engineer's job on others; anything involving the gas supply, the wiring loom or the control board is not a job to attempt. Your manual takes precedence over anything below.

Which of the three faults you have
Before touching anything, answer one question: what does it actually do when you turn it on?
The bake element, on an electric oven
An electric oven has at least two heating elements: one at the bottom or hidden beneath the floor of the cavity for baking, and one at the top for grilling. They are separate parts on separate circuits.
That separation is the whole diagnostic. If the grill glows red and works normally while the oven stays cold, the grill element and the power supply are both proved good. What is left is the bake element or the circuit that feeds it — and the element itself is by far the more likely of the two.
What a failed bake element looks like:
- No glow at all from the bottom element when the oven is set to bake and given a few minutes. On models where the element is concealed under the cavity floor you will not see it, so judge by heat instead.
- A visible break, blister or bright burnt patch on the element, where the metal sheath has ruptured. Sometimes there is a small scorch mark on the cavity below it.
- It failed suddenly rather than gradually. Elements tend to go all at once, often with a brief flash or a tripped breaker at the moment they fail.
- The oven trips the breaker when set to bake but not when grilling. That is an element that has failed to earth rather than simply gone open circuit.
Bake elements are among the cheaper appliance parts and, on many models, are held in by two screws inside the cavity with two spade connectors behind. On other models the element is buried behind the rear panel or under the base, and the job is considerably larger. Look up your specific model before deciding it is a five-minute job.
One thing worth ruling out first, because it costs nothing: a thermal fuse or thermal cut-out. Many ovens have a one-shot safety fuse that blows if the cavity or the surrounding cabinet overheats — often triggered by a blocked cooling vent or a long self-clean cycle. When it goes, the oven loses heat while the display, the light and sometimes the grill continue working normally. It is a cheap part, but replacing it without asking why it blew simply postpones the problem.
The igniter, on a gas oven
A gas oven does not open the gas valve until it is confident something will light it. On most modern gas ovens that confidence comes from the igniter: a component that heats up and, once it draws enough current, causes the safety valve to open.
The important consequence is that a weak igniter fails in a very particular way. It still glows — often brightly — but no longer draws enough current to open the valve. So the oven looks like it is trying, sometimes for several minutes, and never lights. People replace thermostats and control boards chasing this, because a glowing igniter looks healthy.
The signature:
- It glows for a long time and then nothing happens. A healthy igniter typically brings the gas on within about a minute; a much longer glow with no ignition points at a weak one.
- It got gradually worse. Igniters degrade over time — first taking longer to light, then failing intermittently, then not at all. Unlike an electric element they rarely fail cleanly.
- The hob still works fine. Hob burners are usually lit by a spark rather than by the oven's igniter, so a working hob proves the gas supply is fine and tells you nothing about the oven.
- It lights eventually on a warm day or after several attempts. Classic intermittent igniter behaviour.
Do not be tempted to light a gas oven manually with a match or a lighter unless the manufacturer's instructions for your specific model explicitly describe that procedure. On an oven designed around an electronic safety valve, that is dangerous.
Igniter replacement is a gas appliance repair. Depending on where you live it may legally require a registered engineer, and it is not a job to improvise.
Heats, but slowly and inaccurately
This is the frustrating one, because nothing is obviously broken. The oven works. It just cannot be trusted.
Typical reports: takes far longer to preheat than it used to, never quite reaches the set temperature, browns unevenly, or burns the outside of things while leaving the middle raw. Baking suffers first because baking is the least forgiving of temperature error.
The usual causes, roughly in order:
- The temperature sensor has drifted. Most modern ovens use a probe inside the cavity whose electrical resistance changes with temperature. As it ages the readings wander, and the oven confidently maintains the wrong temperature. It is a modest part and a common failure.
- The door seal is worn or the door does not close squarely. Heat leaking out means the oven never catches up. Run a hand around the closed door — you should not feel a stream of hot air. A gasket that has gone hard, split, or come out of its groove is easy to spot and inexpensive to replace.
- The door hinges have sagged, so the door looks shut but is not sealing at the top. Common on older ovens and often mistaken for a seal problem.
- The thermostat is failing on ovens that use a mechanical capillary thermostat rather than an electronic sensor.
- One of several elements has failed on an oven with more than two. A fan oven with a dead ring element may still heat via the bake element — slowly, unevenly, and never properly.
Before condemning anything, verify the fault with an oven thermometer. They cost very little, and they answer the question the oven cannot answer honestly: set it to 180 °C, let it settle for twenty minutes, and read the actual temperature. A consistent offset of ten or fifteen degrees can often be corrected in the oven's own calibration setting — many ovens have one, documented in the manual and rarely used. A gap of fifty degrees, or a reading that swings wildly, is a real fault.
Worth ruling out first, because it is free: an oven full of shelves, trays and stone slabs preheats far more slowly than an empty one, and a cavity crowded with foil or a tray covering the base blocks the airflow the oven relies on.
Dead display, nothing at all
If there is no display, no light and no sound, do not look at elements. Look at the electricity.
- The breaker. Built-in ovens are typically on their own circuit, often a high-rated one shared with the hob. Check the consumer unit for a tripped breaker or RCD.
- The cooker isolator switch, usually a large switch on the wall near the cooker, sometimes above a worktop or inside an adjacent cupboard. It gets knocked off during cleaning surprisingly often.
- The plug and socket, on freestanding ovens that plug in. Test the socket with something else.
- A fuse in the plug, where fitted.
If the breaker trips again immediately, or trips the moment you select a particular function, stop resetting it. Something is drawing a fault current and repeatedly forcing it back on is not safe.
Child lock, demo mode and the clock
Three settings can produce an oven that appears completely functional and simply will not heat. All three are free to fix and all three are missed regularly.
- Child lock. The display works, the controls respond, and nothing happens. Usually a padlock symbol somewhere on the display, cleared by holding a specific button for a few seconds.
- Demo or showroom mode. Ovens on shop display run in a mode where every light and menu works but the heating elements are disabled. It occasionally survives delivery, and the symptom is a brand-new oven that has never heated once.
- The clock is not set. Many ovens refuse to operate until the time of day has been set — after a power cut, they revert to a flashing display and lock out the oven entirely. This is one of the most common false alarms there is.
- A timer or delay-start is active. The oven is obediently waiting for a start time you set by accident. Cancelling the timer usually restores manual control immediately.
Check all four before assuming anything is broken, especially if the oven is new, has just been moved, or has just come back on after a power cut.
Fan ovens and the third element
A fan oven — also sold as convection — usually has a circular element around the fan at the back, in addition to the top and bottom elements. Which element runs depends on the function you select.
That creates a diagnostic shortcut worth knowing: try every function. If conventional bake works but fan bake does not, the ring element or the fan is the fault, not the oven as a whole. If fan works and conventional does not, the reverse. An oven where only the grill works has lost both.
Two related points:
- A fan that has stopped turning gives you an oven that seems to heat but cooks appallingly unevenly, because the heat sits around the ring element instead of circulating.
- A cooling fan that runs on after the oven is off is doing its job and is not a fault. One that never runs can cause overheating and blown thermal fuses.
Is it worth repairing?
Some rough guidance, without pretending to know local prices:
- A bake element, thermal fuse, door seal or temperature sensor on an oven under about ten years old is usually worth fixing. These are inexpensive parts and the rest of the appliance is typically fine.
- A control board is often the point where a repair stops making sense, particularly on a mid-range oven. Boards are among the dearest parts and are sometimes no longer produced.
- Multiple faults at once — a failed element plus a drifting sensor plus a sagging door — usually means the appliance is simply worn out.
- Get the model number first. Parts availability, not the fault itself, decides many of these. On a discontinued model with no parts, the decision makes itself.
Always ask whether a call-out charge is deducted from the repair cost if you go ahead. It frequently is, and it changes the arithmetic.
What to check, in order
- Is the display alive? If not, go to the breaker, the cooker isolator switch and the socket — and stop there.
- Is the clock set, and is child lock, demo mode or a delay timer active? Free, and commonly the whole answer.
- Does the grill heat? If yes, power and half the oven are proved good — you are looking at the bake element or igniter.
- Try every function — fan, conventional, grill — and note which ones produce heat.
- Electric oven: look for a break, blister or scorch on the bake element, and consider a blown thermal fuse if everything else works.
- Gas oven: watch the igniter. A long bright glow with no ignition is a weak igniter, even though it looks healthy.
- Heats but wrongly? Put an oven thermometer in, set 180 °C, wait twenty minutes and read it.
- Feel around the closed door for escaping heat, and check the seal for splits and hard patches.
- Empty the cavity of stored trays and stones, and remove any foil covering the base.
- Get the model number off the plate — usually on the door frame — before calling anyone.
Stopping it happening again
- Do not line the oven floor with foil. It blocks airflow and reflects heat back at the element, which is a documented cause of premature element and fuse failure on many ovens.
- Keep the cooling vents clear. Blocked vents overheat the surrounding cabinet and blow thermal fuses.
- Use self-clean sparingly if your oven has a high-temperature pyrolytic cycle. It runs the oven far hotter than cooking ever does, and it is a well-known trigger for thermal fuse and element failures on ageing appliances.
- Do not slam the door, and do not use it as a shelf. Hinges sag, seals fail, and both cost you temperature accuracy long before they announce themselves.
- Check the seal once a year by running a hand around the closed door.
- Keep an oven thermometer in there permanently. It costs almost nothing and it tells you the oven is drifting months before your baking does.
- Don't store trays inside the oven. Every one of them has to be heated from cold before your food starts cooking.
Sort the fault before you diagnose it. Dead display means a power problem — breaker, cooker isolator switch, socket — and nothing inside the oven. Working grill but a cold oven means the heating part has failed: on electric that is the bake element or a blown thermal fuse, on gas it is almost always the igniter, which fails while still glowing brightly and so gets overlooked. Heats but slowly or inaccurately means the oven is lying about its temperature — a drifted sensor, a worn door seal or sagging hinges — and an inexpensive oven thermometer will tell you how far off it is before you buy any parts. Before any of that, rule out the free ones: an unset clock, a child lock, demo mode or a delay timer will each give you an oven that looks perfect and refuses to heat.
