Watch the cursor first
Nothing moves at all
- Look for the sensor light. Turn the mouse over. Most optical mice glow, and many pulse briefly when moved. No light usually means no power, which points at batteries, the switch on the base being off, or a dead cable.
- Batteries first, on anything wireless. Not "the light still comes on so they're fine" — a battery too weak to sustain the radio can still light an LED. Swap them.
- Different USB port, directly on the computer rather than a hub, dock, or monitor. Docks are a common single point of failure and people rarely suspect them.
- Different cable for a wired mouse. Cables fail where they flex, near the plug.
- Restart the computer. A USB stack that's got itself confused is cleared by a restart, and this is genuinely worth doing before anything more involved.
- Check Device Manager (Windows) for a warning icon under Mice. If it's there, uninstall that entry and unplug/replug so the driver reinstalls cleanly.
Keyboard-only navigation while you fix this: Tab moves between controls, Space and Enter activate, and the Windows key opens the Start menu. If the keyboard is also dead, see our keyboard guide — a dead mouse and keyboard together usually means one shared cause like a failed hub.
Jumpy, stuttering, or drifting
The cursor moves but not smoothly — it skips, freezes momentarily, or slides on its own.
- Clean the sensor. Turn the mouse over and look at the lens. A single hair across it produces exactly this behaviour, and it's astonishingly common. Blow it out or wipe gently with a dry cloth.
- Clean the feet too. Grit stuck to the pads makes the mouse skate unevenly.
- Check the surface. See the next section — this is the cause people miss most.
- Drifting on its own with no hand on it is usually a stuck button or a sensor picking up vibration. Try it on a different surface first.
- Only stutters in one program? Then it's that program, not the mouse — a game with a display setting problem, or a browser tab consuming the machine. Our browser guide covers finding the tab responsible.

The surface problem
Optical mice work by photographing the surface many times a second and comparing frames. That requires visible texture. Some surfaces don't provide any:
- Glass desks. The classic. A standard optical mouse cannot track on clear glass at all — there's nothing to photograph. Only mice with a specific glass-capable sensor manage it.
- High-gloss or mirrored finishes, including some white and piano-black desks.
- Uniform surfaces with no pattern — a plain white laminate can be marginal.
- Anything transparent or reflective the mouse can partly see through.
The test takes five seconds: put a sheet of paper under the mouse. If it suddenly tracks perfectly, the desk was the problem and nothing is wrong with your mouse. A cheap mousepad is the permanent fix, and it's a better result than the driver reinstall you were about to do.
One click registers as two
You click once and the system registers two. Files open when you meant to select them. Dragging something releases it halfway across the screen.
This is switch bounce, and it's mechanical. The metal contact inside the switch loses its springiness after a few million clicks and chatters instead of making one clean contact. It's wear, not a setting, and it gets progressively worse.
What can be done:
- Rule out the setting first. Check the double-click speed in your mouse settings — if it's set very slow, two deliberate clicks can merge. That's a different problem with a one-click fix.
- Confirm it's the hardware: the fault will follow the mouse to another computer. If it does, it's the switch.
- Debounce software exists that ignores a second click arriving impossibly fast. It's a workaround, not a repair, and it can make deliberate fast clicking unreliable.
- Check the warranty. This is a common enough failure that manufacturers of more expensive mice often replace under warranty without much argument.
- Replacing the switch is a genuine repair — soldering, and worth it only on an expensive mouse.
Realistically, on a budget mouse, this is the end of its life. It's the most common way a mouse dies.
Wireless dropouts
Works fine, then freezes for a second, repeatedly.
- Batteries. Again. A dying battery causes intermittent behaviour long before it causes nothing, which is far more confusing than a clean failure. This is the first thing to change, every time.
- Move the receiver. A dongle in the back of a desktop, behind a metal case and under the desk, has a much worse path to the mouse than one on a front port or a short USB extension. Moving it fixes a large share of these cases and costs nothing.
- USB 3 devices interfere with 2.4 GHz wireless. This is well documented: an external drive or unshielded hub next to the receiver floods the band the mouse uses. Move them apart and test.
- Metal and monitors. Passing the signal across a metal desk surface or right beside a monitor's power supply degrades it.

- Windows power management can suspend a USB receiver. Device Manager → the USB Root Hub → Properties → Power Management → uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
Laptop trackpads
- Check it isn't switched off. Most laptops have a function key that disables the trackpad, usually with a small trackpad icon, and it's easy to hit by accident. Many also disable it automatically when an external mouse is connected — unplug the mouse and see.
- Dry hands matter. Trackpads sense capacitance, so slightly damp or very dry fingers both track badly. So do gloves.
- Clean the surface with a barely damp cloth. Skin oil genuinely affects tracking.
- Check the gesture and sensitivity settings, which get reset by updates.
- A bulging trackpad is a battery warning. If the trackpad has become stiff, raised, or clicks unevenly, look at whether the laptop still sits flat. A swelling battery pushes up from underneath and this is often the first symptom. That's a stop-using-it situation — see our laptop guide.
Isolating it in two minutes
- Paper under the mouse. Rules the surface in or out instantly.
- Different computer. Fault follows the mouse → it's the mouse. Fault stays behind → it's the computer or its ports.
- Different mouse on this computer. The other half of the same test.
- Different port, no hub or dock. Eliminates the most common connection cause.
- Fresh batteries before concluding anything about a wireless mouse.
Watch the cursor. Dead → batteries, port, cable. Jumpy → put a sheet of paper under it; glass and gloss desks defeat optical sensors entirely. Double-clicking on its own → the switch is worn out, and that's mechanical. Freezing for a second at a time → change the batteries, then move the receiver away from USB 3 devices.
