Under-inflated tyres run hot, handle worse and can fail at speed — this warning is not cosmetic. If a tyre is visibly flat or the car pulls, drags or thumps, don't drive on it. This article explains how the system works; your vehicle handbook and the placard on your door frame are the authority for your specific car, and anything about tyre damage is a job for someone who can see the tyre.
What the light actually means
The warning — usually a horseshoe-shaped symbol with an exclamation mark, meant to represent a cross-section of a tyre — means at least one tyre is meaningfully below its correct pressure. It does not mean a tyre is flat, and it does not tell you which one.
Regulators in many markets require these systems on cars built from the mid-to-late 2000s onward, and the threshold is set well below correct pressure rather than slightly below. That's deliberate: it's meant to catch genuine under-inflation, not normal variation. So while the light usually isn't an emergency, it also isn't nothing — by the time it comes on, the tyre is significantly low.
The reason this matters at all is that under-inflation is not a comfort issue. A soft tyre flexes more in the sidewall, which generates heat, and heat is what destroys tyres at speed. It also lengthens braking distances, blunts steering response and wears the tyre's shoulders away.
The sidewall number is the wrong number
This is the single most common and most consequential error in this whole subject.
Moulded into the side of your tyre is a pressure figure. That is the maximum pressure the tyre is rated for — not the pressure your car wants. It's a property of the tyre, printed by the tyre manufacturer, and it has nothing to do with your vehicle.
The correct pressure is set by the car maker, based on the car's weight, its suspension and how the load sits on each axle. You'll find it on a placard — a sticker usually inside the driver's door frame, sometimes in the fuel filler flap or the glovebox — and repeated in the handbook.
Two details from the placard that people miss. Front and rear pressures are frequently different — setting all four to the front figure is wrong. And many placards list a second, higher set of pressures for a fully loaded car, which is the one to use when the car is packed for a trip.
Why cold mornings set it off
Air pressure falls as air gets colder. The rule of thumb is roughly 1 psi for every 10 °F (about 0.07 bar for every 5–6 °C) of temperature drop.
So a car set correctly during a mild afternoon, parked overnight through the first cold snap, can lose enough pressure to cross the warning threshold without a molecule of air escaping. Nothing is leaking. The air simply contracted.
This explains three things at once:
- Why the light appears in the morning and sometimes clears itself after half an hour of driving — the tyres warm up, pressure rises back above the threshold.
- Why it arrives on all four tyres simultaneously in autumn. Four simultaneous punctures would be remarkable; four tyres in the same cold air is just physics.
- Why it's still worth acting on. If cold weather pushed it below the threshold, it was already low. Top it up.
The corresponding trap runs the other way: "cold pressure" means before the car has been driven, not cold outdoors. Driving heats tyres and raises pressure by a few psi. Setting pressure on hot tyres to the placard figure leaves them under-inflated once they cool. Check first thing, or after the car has sat for a few hours — and if you must set them warm, allow a few psi above the placard figure.
Steady versus flashing
These mean genuinely different things, and the difference is worth knowing because one of them can't be fixed with air.
The flashing pattern most often appears after new tyres or a wheel swap — the sensors weren't matched to the car — or after several years, when a sensor's sealed internal battery reaches the end of its life. Those batteries typically last several years and are not replaceable on their own; the sensor is replaced as a unit.
Two kinds of system, two different fixes
Cars use one of two approaches, and which one you have changes what happens after you inflate.
Direct systems put a pressure sensor inside each wheel, which radios a reading to the car. These give actual pressure figures — often displayed per corner — and usually clear on their own shortly after driving once pressure is correct. Their weaknesses are sensor batteries that eventually die, and the need to relearn sensors when wheels are swapped.
Indirect systems have no sensors at all. They infer under-inflation from wheel speed: a softer tyre has a slightly smaller rolling radius, so it turns marginally faster than the others. Cheap, nothing to fail — but with one significant consequence:
An indirect system must be reset after you inflate. It works by comparison against a stored baseline, so until you tell it the pressures are now correct, it keeps comparing against the old reference. The reset is usually a button under the dashboard or a menu item, and it's in the handbook. This is why people inflate their tyres, drive around, and find the light stubbornly still on.
An indirect system also can't detect all four tyres losing pressure equally — which is exactly what cold weather does — because it only sees differences between wheels.
It came back on — why
In rough order of likelihood:
- A slow puncture. A nail or screw can seal itself well enough to lose only a little pressure a day. If one tyre needs air weekly, it has an object in it.
- The valve. Valve cores loosen and valve stems perish, especially older rubber ones. A cheap part and a very common cause.
- Corrosion at the bead, where the tyre seals against the wheel rim. Common on alloy wheels that have been kerbed or exposed to road salt.
- You didn't reset an indirect system — covered above.
- Temperature is still falling. A top-up done in mild weather won't survive a sharper cold snap.
- The spare. Some cars monitor a full-size spare, and a spare that's sat for years is almost certainly low.
- A failing sensor reporting nonsense — usually accompanied by the flashing pattern.
The diagnostic that separates these: a leak loses pressure steadily over days regardless of weather; temperature loss follows the forecast and partly recovers when it warms.
How to check pressure properly
- Find the placard — driver's door frame first, then the fuel flap or handbook. Note the front and rear figures, and the loaded figures if listed.
- Check when cold, meaning before driving or after several hours parked.
- Use a gauge you trust. The gauges on public forecourt air machines are frequently well out of calibration. A basic gauge of your own is inexpensive and settles the question.
- Check all four, plus the spare if you have one.
- Inflate to the placard figure, not the sidewall number, and not "a bit extra for safety".
- Replace the valve caps. They keep dirt and water out of the valve, which is a real cause of slow leaks.
- Reset the system if it's indirect. Handbook.
- Look at the tread while you're there — uneven wear across a tyre is itself a symptom. Wear on both shoulders suggests chronic under-inflation; wear down the centre suggests over-inflation.
Where people go wrong
- Inflating to the sidewall maximum. The most consequential error here — it over-inflates the car, shrinks the contact patch and hurts wet grip.
- Setting all four to the same figure when the placard specifies different front and rear pressures.
- Checking pressure after a drive and setting to placard — leaves the tyres low once cool.
- Ignoring it because it comes on every cold morning. That's a tyre sitting near the threshold all winter.
- Assuming a flashing light means low pressure. It means the system can't see the tyres at all — so a real leak would now go unwarned.
- Trusting the forecourt gauge. Frequently inaccurate.
- Forgetting the spare. Often the reason a light won't clear after all four are correct.
- Treating a repeatedly-low tyre as normal. Weekly top-ups mean something is in the tyre.
The light means a tyre is significantly under-inflated, not that it's flat — and on the first cold morning of the year it's usually just physics, since pressure falls about 1 psi per 10 °F. Use the pressure on the door placard, never the number moulded into the tyre sidewall, which is the tyre's maximum rating and has nothing to do with your car. Set them cold, meaning before driving. If the warning flashes for a minute before staying on, that's a fault in the monitoring system itself and no amount of air will clear it. And if one tyre needs topping up every week, it has something in it.
